Nigeria Police Force Prepares for Potential Implementation of State Police
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has expressed its commitment to supporting the establishment of state police, contingent upon official approval. The focus will be on maintaining professionalism, accountability, and operational excellence within a new policing framework.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun made this declaration at the opening of a one-day sensitization workshop concerning state police, hosted by the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies (NIPS).
The workshop aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of police officers, enabling them to engage constructively in discussions about state police and to adapt effectively to future policing reforms.
Egbetokun urged attendees to make the most of the workshop and to share the information gained with officers in their commands, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the proposed reforms throughout the Force.
Professor Olu Ogunshakin, Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies, commended the Inspector-General for his initiative in establishing the Nigeria Police Force Steering Committee on State Police. He noted that several recommendations from this committee have been integrated into the proposed State Police Bill, marking a significant advancement in Nigeria’s policing reform efforts.
This sensitization workshop is part of broader initiatives by the Nigeria Police Force to prepare its personnel for upcoming reforms, enhance operational efficiency, and maintain public trust in policing.
