‘Police will ensure lawful choice of voters prevails’ — IGP Disu on Osun election
Inspector-General of Police Assures Neutrality for Upcoming Osun State Election
ABUJA — Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu affirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to neutrality in the upcoming governorship election in Osun State, scheduled for August 15.
Disu made the announcement during a meeting with civil society organizations (CSOs) on Friday, led by Auwal Rafsanjani from the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC). The discussion centered on the security measures being implemented for the election.
The IGP emphasized that the police have established robust security protocols to ensure a peaceful, free, and credible electoral process. He reminded officers assigned to election duty to act professionally and impartially.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains a professional, apolitical, and impartial institution,” Disu stated. He reiterated that the police have no allegiance to any candidate or political party, stressing that their only interest is to uphold the lawful choices of the electorate.
To bolster security, Disu announced that additional personnel and operational equipment have been deployed across Osun State. Furthermore, intelligence efforts have been intensified to identify and mitigate potential threats.
He warned against unlawful activities, stating, “Anyone found engaging in vote-buying, voter intimidation, ballot box snatching, thuggery, or any other electoral offence will be dealt with in accordance with the law, irrespective of political affiliation or status.”
Disu called on political parties, candidates, and their supporters to promote peaceful campaigning, urging that elections should be decided by ideas and policies rather than coercion.
He encouraged residents of Osun to participate in the election without fear for their safety.
