Chelsea’s Romeo Lavia Completes First Full Match in Over Two Years
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has commended midfielder Romeo Lavia following his successful return to the pitch, completing his first full match in over two years during a pre-season friendly against AC Milan.
The 22-year-old Lavia was one of only four Chelsea players to play the entire match, which took place at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Central Jakarta, Indonesia, on Saturday. Lavia’s performance was instrumental in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over the team managed by Ruben Amorim.
Joao Pedro initiated the scoring just before halftime, heading the ball past AC Milan goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani from close range. Less than a minute into the second half, Pedro added to his tally from within the six-yard box. Moises Caicedo completed the scoring shortly thereafter with a volley struck from outside the box.
Although Lavia did not score, he was pivotal in Chelsea’s midfield, contributing to playmaking and effectively disrupting the opposition’s rhythm. Alongside Robert Sanchez, Josh Acheampong, and Marco Palestra, Lavia played the full 90 minutes.
This match marked the first time since August 4, 2024, when Chelsea faced Manchester City, that Lavia had completed a full game.
In a post-match interview with club media, Alonso expressed his satisfaction with Lavia’s performance. “I am very happy with him because he has a break, a block,” he said, gesturing towards his head. “He was fatigued, but I told him, ‘Let him play, let him enjoy the 90 minutes.’ He finished the match exhausted, so I believe he is truly happy.”
