Rio Ferdinand Suggests Arsenal’s Title Win Relied on Rodri’s Injury
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand contends that Arsenal’s recent Premier League title victory may not have been possible had Manchester City midfielder Rodri remained healthy. Arsenal concluded a 22-year title drought by finishing first in the league with 85 points, finishing eight points ahead of Manchester City.
During a recent podcast, Ferdinand expressed confidence that Manchester City, with Rodri in the lineup for the entire season, would have surpassed Arsenal for the championship. Rodri’s absence was notable, as he missed 27 matches across all competitions and started only 17 of 38 Premier League games last season, presenting challenges for City manager Pep Guardiola.
Ferdinand discussed Rodri’s importance to the team, particularly as Manchester City prepares for a transitional period following Guardiola’s departure. He indicated that Rodri’s potential move to Barcelona could further impact City’s performance.
“Can we just talk about Manchester City please?” Ferdinand said, highlighting the challenges the club faces. “Not only have they lost Pep Guardiola, but it now appears they are also losing Rodri. That’s two of the most crucial figures at the football club over the past seven or eight years.”
He added, “If Rodri had started and played every match last season without injury, Manchester City would have won the Premier League. No disrespect to Arsenal, but if Rodri had played ten more games, Manchester City would have claimed the league.”
Looking ahead, Ferdinand noted that Manchester City faces a significant challenge in maintaining its competitive edge in the coming season.
In contrast, Arsenal appears to be strengthening its position. The club has secured a transfer for Bruno Guimaraes, one of the Premier League’s top midfielders, and is expected to pursue additional signings to reinforce its roster this summer.
