‘Obasanjo has no electoral value’ – Atiku

Atiku Abubakar Questions Obasanjo’s Political Influence

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar made headlines on Wednesday by asserting that former President Olusegun Obasanjo lacks political value.

In comments directed at reporters, Abubakar expressed indifference regarding Obasanjo’s choice not to endorse his candidacy. “In 1999, he could not even win his own state or the Southwest; it was Arewa that made him President. He possesses no electoral value,” Abubakar stated.

The relationship between the two has been strained since they completed their terms in office in 2007, having served as President and Vice President for eight years. Abubakar had previously revealed that his opposition to Obasanjo’s bid for a third term was motivated by a commitment to Nigeria’s Constitution and democratic principles, rather than personal loyalty.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Abubakar highlighted his record of promoting younger individuals within the government during his tenure as Vice President. He mentioned that many of these individuals have since advanced to significant positions, including governors and ministers. Abubakar emphasized his intention to continue fostering opportunities for young Nigerians to serve and lead if elected President.
