Electoral Act Amendment: ‘Akpabio is the problem, Tinubu lapdog’ — El-Rufai

Former Kaduna Governor Criticizes Senate President Over Electoral Act Controversy

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has sharply criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio, claiming that Akpabio is the primary obstacle in the controversy regarding proposed amendments to the Electoral Act.

In an interview with Trust TV, El-Rufai dismissed assertions that the Senate as an institution is responsible for the contentious situation. He asserted that the challenges arise from Akpabio’s leadership. “It is not the Senate that is the problem here. Akpabio is the problem,” El-Rufai stated, adding, “By every definition, he is a scumbag.”

El-Rufai further alleged that Akpabio operates on behalf of powerful political interests, branding him a “lapdog” to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He urged senators who oppose the amendment to unite and actively resist it when the National Assembly reconvenes.

“The senators will have to come together, protest, and prevent that from happening,” he said.

Additionally, El-Rufai rejected the title “distinguished” often associated with members of the Senate, citing his longstanding familiarity with Akpabio as a basis for this perspective. “I don’t consider him ‘distinguished.’ We’ve known each other since the 1990s. I’ve seen how far we’ve come, so I am qualified to call him what he is,” he remarked.
