Lagos Welcomes Premiere of Historical Film ‘King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos’

LAGOS, Nigeria — The highly anticipated historical epic, “King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos,” premiered at IMAX Cinema in Lekki on Sunday, August 23, 2026. The event drew traditional rulers, cultural custodians, Nollywood stars, and other distinguished guests to celebrate Yoruba history and heritage.

The film’s nationwide release is set for Friday, August 28. Produced by Teqsus Studios, the premiere featured a red-carpet gathering highlighting the film’s cultural significance, with prominent figures from the Nigerian film industry and the traditional institution in attendance.

The presence of traditional rulers, high chiefs, and members of the Kosoko royal family underscored the historical relevance of the production, which centers on Oba Kosoko and a pivotal period in Lagos history. The narrative delves into the political struggles related to Lagos, its complex relationship with the Benin Empire, and the competition over trade and influence during the colonial era.

“King Kosoko” also explores the impact of external forces, the regional politics of the time, and the transatlantic slave trade, focusing on the preservation of Yoruba identity and Lagos’ sovereignty.

Under the direction of Adebayo Tijani, the film showcases performances from an ensemble cast that includes Femi Adebayo, Tina Mba, Odunlade Adekola, and Jide Kosoko, among others. Producers Ayo Ajayi and Segun Ololo Kosoko, alongside co-producer Marc Adebesin, aim to bridge past and present through cinematic storytelling.

Following its successful premiere, “King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos” will be available in cinemas across Nigeria starting August 28, allowing audiences to engage with this significant chapter of Lagos’ royal history.
