Tinubu resubmits former Kebbi Governor Dakingari’s name for ambassadorial role

President Resubmits Usman Dakingari’s Nomination for Ambassadorial Position

President Bola Tinubu has resubmitted former Kebbi State Governor Usman Dakingari’s name to the Senate for confirmation as Nigeria’s ambassador, following the withdrawal of his previous nomination approximately two weeks ago.

The new request was conveyed in a letter presented to the Senate during a Tuesday plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In the letter, Tinubu stated that the nomination is made under Section 171 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and urged the Senate to expedite its consideration.

“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Usman Dakingari as ambassador,” the President wrote, emphasizing the need for prompt action.

Subsequently, Akpabio referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs for screening, instructing the committee to report back within one week. During discussions, some senators raised concerns regarding classification; while the president’s letter described the position as a career appointment, several lawmakers suggested it should instead be viewed as a non-career role based on Dakingari’s political background.

The distinction is expected to inform the committee’s screening process. The Foreign Affairs Committee is slated to complete its evaluation and deliver its report within the specified timeframe.

This nomination reflects Tinubu’s administration’s ongoing effort to fill vacant ambassadorial positions and enhance Nigeria’s representation in key foreign missions, many of which have remained unoccupied since the government transition. Dakingari was previously designated as ambassador to Turkey in January, but his name was removed from the confirmation list amid political and diplomatic discussions.

The Senate’s renewed consideration of Dakingari’s appointment now moves through the formal confirmation process.
