Ohanaeze Youth Council calls for urgent repair of Ihiagwa-Naze Obinze road
The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has called on Minister of Works David Umahi and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma to take immediate action to address the poor condition of the Ihiagwa-Naze-Obinze road.
In a statement released on Monday, OYC National President Igboayaka O. Igboayaka highlighted that the deteriorating state of the road poses significant challenges and security risks for students attending the Federal University of Technology Owerri and the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede.
Igboayaka emphasized the road’s importance, noting that while it is classified as a state road, it serves as a critical connector to the two federal institutions located in Owerri. He urged the Federal Ministry of Works, led by Umahi, to intervene and alleviate the difficulties faced by students and residents.
“The road has suffered years of neglect and heavy dilapidation, leading to vehicle damage and extended travel times,” Igboayaka said. He also expressed concern over increasing insecurity in the area, citing incidents of kidnapping, carjacking, and motorcycle theft attributed to conditions along the roadway.
To improve safety and accessibility, Igboayaka recommended a collaborative effort between the federal and state governments, including plans for expanding drainage systems toward the Ihiagwa market and constructing new bridges.
