Kano Police Arrest Two in Connection with Murder of Government Critic
KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Police Command reported the arrest of two suspects linked to the murder of Ibrahim Khalil Danshagamu, a well-known government critic, who was killed in his home on September 8, 2026.
According to the police, Danshagamu, a resident of Gaida Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area, was attacked shortly after 11:30 p.m. on the night of his death. The Commander of the Gaida Vigilante Group alerted police to the incident, stating that armed individuals forcibly entered Danshagamu’s residence and assaulted him with sharp objects.
Responding swiftly, officers from the Kumbotso Police Division were dispatched to the scene. Danshagamu was transported to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital in Kano, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
In a statement, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa outlined the police’s response to the incident, noting that, under the direction of Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, an intelligence-driven operation was conducted. This operation led to the identification and arrest of two individuals suspected of involvement in the murder.
The suspects remain in police custody and are currently being interrogated. Authorities are also working to identify any additional individuals connected to the crime. Kiyawa confirmed that forensic procedures and statements were being gathered to uncover the motives behind the attack.
Commissioner Bakori expressed his condolences to Danshagamu’s family and reaffirmed the police command’s dedication to addressing violent crimes in the region. “The Kano State Police Command will not relent in its mandate to protect lives and property. We assure the good people of Kano that justice will be pursued to its logical conclusion,” he stated.
The police recognized the critical role played by the Gaida Vigilante Group in providing timely information that allowed for a rapid police response. Kiyawa emphasized the importance of community policing in preventing crime and urged the public to remain vigilant and share credible information with law enforcement.
The investigation is ongoing, and the suspects are expected to face charges once the inquiry concludes. In the meantime, additional patrols and intelligence operations have been implemented in Gaida and surrounding areas to maintain order and prevent further violence.
