Lagos begins month-long partial closure of Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway

Lagos State Announces Partial Closure of Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway for Repairs

LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has announced a month-long partial closure of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway to facilitate essential rehabilitation of deteriorating sections of the road.

The closure, affecting both inbound and outbound lanes, will begin on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, and is expected to last until Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

Transportation Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi conveyed the information in a statement released to the media. According to the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, the rehabilitation, conducted by the Federal Ministry of Works, will address repairs from the U-Turn Bus Stop to the Sango Tollgate.

To minimize disruption for commuters, the rehabilitation will unfold in two phases, utilizing traffic diversions and lane-by-lane repairs.

The first phase will focus on the Abeokuta-bound carriageway, covering the section from the U-Turn Bus Stop to Sango Tollgate, and is scheduled to take place over three weeks from February 11 to March 4, 2026. During this phase, traffic heading from Lagos and Abule-Egba to Abeokuta and Sango Tollgate will be redirected to one half of the carriageway, approximately 20 meters from the active construction zone. Repairs will be conducted on one lane at a time, allowing for the redirection of vehicles to the completed lane as work progresses.

Motorists on the Lagos-bound carriageway during this phase are expected to experience an uninterrupted flow of traffic.

The second phase, focusing on Lagos-bound traffic, will cover the stretch from Obadeyi Bus Stop to Ekoro Junction. This phase will last for one week, from March 4 to March 11, 2026. During this phase, traffic from Abeokuta and Sango Tollgate towards Lagos and Abule-Egba will also be rerouted to the non-construction side of the road. Once vehicles are redirected to the repaired section, normal traffic flow will resume.

Motorists traveling on the Abeokuta-bound carriageway will not encounter disruptions during this second phase.

The Lagos State Government has assured road users that appropriate traffic management measures will be implemented throughout the project to ensure safety and facilitate movement along the corridor.

The Ministry of Transportation has encouraged motorists to plan their journeys in advance, follow traffic signage, and cooperate with traffic officials managing the diversions. The ministry also requested patience and understanding from the public, emphasizing that the rehabilitation efforts are crucial for the benefit of all road users.
