Seven suspects arrested over illegal waste dumping in Lagos
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has apprehended seven individuals suspected of illegal waste disposal following an overnight enforcement operation in the Pattey area of Lagos Island.
The operation, conducted on Wednesday, is part of LAWMA’s ongoing efforts to address illegal waste disposal and other environmental violations throughout Lagos State.
The individuals taken into custody have been identified as Nafisat Alabi, 30, from Kwara State; Aminullah Abdulrasheed, 49, also from Kwara; Segun Adeyemi, 45, from Ogun State; Gboyega Osuntuyi, 44, from Ekiti; Segun Olowe, 26, from Osun; Adebayo Ibrahim, 29, from Oyo; and Stephen Ogboru, 36, from Delta.
During the enforcement exercise, a group of individuals reportedly attempted to disrupt the operation by storming LAWMA’s field office. In response, the area commander from the Lion Building Police Station deployed a tactical team to assist LAWMA personnel and restore order.
LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin emphasized the agency’s commitment to enforcing waste management regulations. “Sustained monitoring and enforcement remain essential to curbing illegal dumping and promoting responsible waste practices,” he stated.
The seven suspects have been transferred to the Task Force Office in Oshodi for prosecution.
Dr. Gbadegesin commended the police for their quick response and urged residents, traders, and businesses in the area to cooperate with LAWMA in efforts to maintain a cleaner environment. He also cautioned the public against interfering with enforcement officers during their operations.
