2027: Adebayo Campaign accuses Tinubu of violating Constitution over foreign stay

The Adewole Adebayo-Bugaje Presidential Campaign Council has criticized President Bola Tinubu for his extended absence from Nigeria, labeling it a breach of constitutional obligations.
In a statement issued Monday by Chief Communications and Media Adviser Comrade Mark Adebayo, the council argued that the nation cannot effectively function through remote governance, especially amid challenges such as economic hardship and insecurity.
The council contended that President Tinubu violated Section 145(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates that the President inform the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives when leaving the country for an extended period or when unable to fulfill his duties. This notification allows the Vice President to assume acting responsibilities.
“By exceeding the 21-day limit without formally transmitting power, the President has created a precarious constitutional vacuum, operating as if he is above the law he vowed to uphold,” the statement read.
The campaign further accused the National Assembly leadership of complicity, noting their failure to invoke Section 145(2), which allows Congress to designate the Vice President as Acting President in the President’s absence beyond the stipulated time frame.
“Instead of enforcing Section 145(2), the National Assembly has chosen to facilitate executive misconduct. By neglecting their oversight responsibilities, lawmakers are contributing to the gradual erosion of Nigeria’s democracy,” the council stated.
According to the campaign, members of the National Assembly have diminished their role as a co-equal branch of government, reducing it to a mere rubber stamp.
The Adebayo-Bugaje campaign called on Nigerians to leverage the 2027 general elections to oust President Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress. They emphasized that protests alone would not resolve the institutional challenges facing the country.
In contrast, the campaign promoted Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, as a leader committed to constitutional adherence and accountability.
“Prince Adebayo makes a solemn pledge to be a President who will earn the trust of Nigerians by upholding, defending, and protecting the Constitution,” the statement asserted.
The campaign emphasized that under an SDP administration, accountability would be central to governance, ensuring a government that is both present and responsive to citizens.
“Nigeria deserves a leader who is dedicated to addressing its challenges from within the country, not a ruler governing from abroad. We must reclaim our nation in 2027 by voting out this unpatriotic, corrupt, and ineffective administration that falsely claims democratic integrity,” it concluded.
