Kubwa explosion: Police reveal cause, launch manhunt for driver
A gas plant fire in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was attributed to a driver who allegedly drove against traffic and crashed into the facility. The incident occurred at Liberty Junction, Byazhin, Kubwa, on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at approximately 6:30 a.m., according to a statement from the FCT Police Command issued by spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh.
The police received a distress call from a resident reporting the fire outbreak, prompting immediate deployment of officers from the Kubwa Police Division to the scene. Upon arrival, authorities found that the fire had spread to nearby shops and other properties.
The Federal Fire Service was contacted and assisted in containing the blaze. Preliminary investigations indicated that an unregistered Toyota 4Runner Jeep was driven against traffic when the driver lost control and crashed into the gas plant. The driver and passengers fled the scene immediately afterward.
The FCT Police Command has since established the driver’s identity and launched a manhunt for his apprehension. “While the Command is currently on the trail of the erring driver, having established his identity, the fire has been contained and no casualties have been recorded,” the statement noted. The total damage to property has not yet been assessed.
