AFCON 2027Q: Iwobi to captain Super Eagles against Guinea-Bissau
Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has been appointed captain of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Guinea-Bissau’s Djurtus. The match is scheduled to take place at the September 24 Stadium in Bissau and will start at 5:00 PM Nigerian time.
Regular captain Wilfred Ndidi is expected to begin the game on the bench, according to SCORENigeria. Iwobi will lead a restructured midfield as the Super Eagles aim to build on their recent 2-1 victory over Madagascar in their opening qualifier last Friday.
At 30 years old, Iwobi is Nigeria’s most-capped active player, having made his 102nd appearance for the national team against Madagascar. His inclusion joins him in the elite 100-cap club alongside notable players such as Moses Simon, Vincent Enyeama, Joseph Yobo, and Ahmed Musa.
