BREAKING: Premier League releases statement, confirms Man City guilty of all charges
Manchester City has been found guilty of violating financial regulations established by the Premier League, according to a statement released by the league. The violations occurred over a nine-season span from 2009 to 2018.
Most notably, the charges stem from the club’s lack of cooperation with the league’s investigation. The independent commission concluded that Manchester City engaged in practices deemed “sham” contracts with several commercial partners, which misrepresented their actual agreements. This manipulation was aimed at inflating the club’s revenues and minimizing its costs.
Additionally, the investigation revealed that the club submitted inaccurate financial statements and concealed critical financial information from auditors and regulatory bodies. The commission highlighted that Manchester City significantly exceeded spending limits established by both the Premier League and UEFA.
The investigation found that during the Premier League’s inquiry, the club failed to adhere to its obligation to cooperate with the league, with three of the four alleged breaches confirmed. The commission found that Manchester City had orchestrated commercial agreements with sponsors that were designed to disguise their actual funding sources, with a portion of sponsorship fees being partially covered by the Abu Dhabi United Group Investment & Development Ltd, which owns the club.
As a result, Manchester City did not accurately report its income and expenditures in compliance with the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules as well as UEFA’s Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Rules.
Richard Masters, Chief Executive of the Premier League, emphasized the importance of the ruling, stating it establishes the facts surrounding Manchester City’s actions over the nearly decade-long violation period. He affirmed the league’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the competition, underscoring the significance of ensuring fairness for all teams and their supporters.
Masters noted, “This disciplinary case, and this decision, are the most significant in Premier League history. There are elements of the case that remain to be decided, including what sanctions will follow these breaches. Now that we have the Commission’s decision, we are committed to moving swiftly through the remainder of the process to provide certainty for the League, our clubs, and fans.”
