LAGOS — Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State lauded the achievements of Flutterwave and its founders, highlighting the crucial roles of opportunity and resilience in Nigeria’s economic growth. His remarks came during the fintech company’s 10th-anniversary gala at The Delborough Lagos earlier this week.

He reflected on the historical evolution of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, reminiscing about the challenges of previous decades when making international calls was both cumbersome and costly.

The governor recognized the contributions of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma, who he credited with laying the groundwork for Nigeria’s economic and technological advancements.

Sanwo-Olu commended Flutterwave’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Olugbenga Agboola, for revolutionizing payment infrastructure in Nigeria, noting that the platform has processed over $50 billion in transactions within its ten years of operation.

“We must give young Nigerians the opportunity to fly,” Sanwo-Olu asserted, emphasizing the need to support innovative ventures that could position Nigeria as a global leader.

He also acknowledged significant contributors to the technology and finance sectors, including Dr. Cosmas Maduka, and reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to business growth and international collaboration.

In closing, Sanwo-Olu called for sustained investment in infrastructure and education to empower Nigeria’s youth to realize their potential and contribute effectively to national development.

The gala attracted notable figures, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Ernest Bai Koroma, along with key business leaders such as Dr. Cosmas Maduka, Ernest Ndukwe, Chairman of MTN Nigeria, and Dr. Stanley Uzochukwu, Founder of Stanel Group and The Delborough Lagos.
