2027: Reps to hold emergency sitting

House to Convene Emergency Session on Election Timetable

The House of Representatives is set to hold an emergency session on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to address issues related to the recently released 2027 general election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

House spokesman Akin Rotimi stated that the announcement from INEC carries “constitutional and national significance,” particularly highlighting the scheduled date of February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections.

Members of the House were informed of the emergency session via an internal memorandum from the Speaker’s office. Lawmakers are expected to focus on legislative matters connected to the timetable, affirming the House’s commitment to responding promptly to developments that impact Nigeria’s democratic process.

Rotimi emphasized the urgency of the session, urging members to prioritize their attendance due to the importance of the discussions.

In addition to the election date, INEC’s timetable includes preparations for party primaries, which are set to occur between July and September 2026, as well as the start of continuous voter registration in April 2026. This announcement comes amid ongoing discussions regarding potential amendments to the Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 elections.
