Shina Peller Advocates Legalisation of Cannabis, Others

Former Lawmaker Advocates for Regulated Legalization of Cannabis in Nigeria
Former House of Representatives member Shina Peller has urged the Nigerian government to consider the regulated legalization of cannabis and other controlled substances, citing potential economic and social advantages. Peller made these remarks on February 14 during an episode of TVC’s TownSquare series, titled “War Against Drug Abuse: Taking Control of Today, Protecting the Future.”
During the discussion, Peller emphasized the necessity of establishing strict regulations to accompany any legalization efforts to mitigate the risks of misuse and societal disruption. “If cannabis is to be legalized in Nigeria, it must be regulated,” he stated, referencing successful models from other countries where such measures are in place regarding distribution and consumption limits.
Peller underscored the need for careful planning, noting Nigeria’s distinct social and regulatory context. “Legalizing cannabis without appropriate regulations could lead to confusion. Without the right structures to manage its use, we cannot discuss legalization responsibly,” he said.
He also pointed to the potential economic benefits of a regulated cannabis industry, suggesting it could serve as a significant revenue stream for the nation. “The revenue generated would necessitate a conversation around regulations, ensuring we achieve the intended goals of legalization,” he added.
