VIO directors urge FG to strengthen road transport regulation, enforcement

Directors and Chief Road Traffic Officers, also known as Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs), are urging the Federal Government to establish comprehensive regulations and improve administration, technology, and enforcement in order to enhance road transportation safety.
Charles Elechi, the Mandate Secretary for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Transportation Secretariat, made this appeal on Tuesday during the 2026 Annual National Conference of Directors and Chief Road Traffic Officers held in Abuja. He emphasized the need for government action to ensure that vehicles meet safety standards, drivers are properly licensed, and regulatory bodies are sufficiently equipped to perform their duties.
Elechi highlighted several challenges facing the sector, including inadequate investment in inspection facilities, inconsistent standards, fragmented data systems, and limited public awareness. He stressed that these issues necessitate prompt government intervention.
“There should be stronger institutional capacity, improved data interoperability, and technology-driven systems to enhance vehicle inspection and driver licensing,” Elechi stated. He also called for lawful and transparent enforcement, supported by appropriate technology and uniform standards across states.
Abubakar Yeldu, Director of the FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services, echoed the need for coordinated government action to strengthen enforcement efforts and restore public confidence in regulatory institutions. He warned that the intimidation of enforcement personnel could undermine compliance with traffic regulations, putting road users at greater risk.
Durojaye Olalekan, the national chairman of the conference, expressed concern about the systemic weaknesses in driver licensing and vehicle inspection, which he believes expose critical institutional gaps. He noted that the administration of motor vehicles is often prioritized as a means of generating revenue rather than a professional system focused on protecting lives.
