CAN reacts to conviction of Christian woman after conversion from Islam in Borno

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has voiced its concern regarding the recent conviction and imprisonment of a Christian woman in Borno State, located in northeastern Nigeria.

In a statement issued by Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association identified the woman as Lami Samuel Dawa and expressed apprehension about the circumstances surrounding her case. Reports indicate that the conviction stems from the woman’s conversion to Christianity; however, the exact details and legal justification for the conviction are currently being verified.

CAN confirmed that an appeal has been filed on behalf of Dawa and underscored its commitment to allow the judicial process to proceed unimpeded. The organization emphasized that this case raises significant issues related to the protection of religious freedom and the fundamental rights outlined in the Nigerian Constitution.

The association advocates for the right of individuals to freely choose, change, or practice their religion without facing coercion, intimidation, or unlawful punishment. In light of this, CAN has called on relevant authorities to safeguard the rights of all individuals involved and to ensure that justice is administered in accordance with the law.

Furthermore, CAN stated that it will continue to monitor the situation and engage with appropriate legal and institutional channels. The organization reaffirms its dedication to promoting peaceful coexistence among Nigerians of diverse religious backgrounds, as well as upholding the fundamental rights and freedoms of all citizens.
