Those who claim to fight for Nigeria often change when they get power – Davido

Afrobeats artist David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has voiced significant concerns regarding poor governance and ongoing injustices in Nigeria.
In a recent episode of the “I Wanna Talk” podcast, Davido shared his frustrations, reflecting on his hope for genuine reform in Nigeria that emerged during the EndSARS protests. He noted that, despite the initial optimism surrounding the demonstrations, many Nigerians quickly returned to their previous routines as celebratory activities resumed in December.
Davido criticized the tendency of political leaders, who often advocate for change, to alter their stance once they assume power. He emphasized his own sense of vulnerability, stating that despite his privileged background, he still fears for his life.
During the podcast, he stressed the urgent need for positive transformation in the country. “I was happy to see Nigerians protest during EndSARS. I thought change was coming, but December came and people were partying,” he said. “Even I, who was initially optimistic about the movement, got discouraged. We can’t kill ourselves; we have kids and people we are living for.”
He further addressed the pervasive economic challenges facing the nation, acknowledging his own struggles while asserting that he cannot fully comprehend the hardships others endure. “What I can say is, Nigeria, fix up. The country has to change from politicians to citizens, everything,” he added.
Davido highlighted the necessity for a shift in mindset among the populace. “We can’t change our society until we change our mindset as a people,” he asserted. “Today, the same people who were protesting are campaigning for politicians. Those who claim to fight for the people often change when they get power.”
