Ekiti builders seek compulsory QR code for construction projects to curb collapse

The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) in Ekiti State is advocating for the mandatory implementation of Quick Response (QR) codes in building construction projects statewide. This initiative aims to combat unlicensed construction practices, enhance professional regulation, and prevent structural failures.

The call for QR codes was made during the 19th Ekiti Builders’ Conference, which took place in Ado-Ekiti under the theme, “Transforming the Building Profession: Strengthening Advocacy and Policy Influence for Effective Housing Delivery and a Sustainable Built Environment.” The event gathered industry professionals and stakeholders to discuss pressing challenges and advancements in the construction sector.

Adebiyi Adeniyi, Chairman of the NIOB Ekiti State Chapter, emphasized that the proposed QR code system would facilitate monitoring of construction projects, help identify trained professionals, and deter unqualified individuals from undertaking building tasks. He urged the state government to collaborate with the institute and ensure that certified builders are engaged in public construction initiatives.

Adeniyi highlighted that the conference aimed to promote modern construction techniques and encourage industry professionals to adopt digital technologies, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the Internet of Things (IoT). He stressed that these innovations could enhance construction standards, efficiency, and safety.

Additionally, Adeniyi counseled both emerging and established builders to pursue professional registration and continuously update their skills while adhering to ethical practices. He warned against using inferior materials and cutting corners, emphasizing that such actions could lead to structural failures. Regular professional training and participation in conferences, he noted, are essential for builders to remain competitive in an evolving industry.

Timothy Ojambati, Chairman of the College of Fellows, underscored the necessity of increasing public awareness regarding the importance of hiring certified builders. He pointed out that many building collapses are linked to the activities of unqualified individuals lacking essential technical knowledge and experience. Ojambati called on the government to strengthen its partnership with the NIOB and engage professional builders in construction projects.

Aladetuyi Adekunle, Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee, stated that the conference theme addresses critical challenges facing the country, such as housing shortages, building collapses, and unlicensed practitioners, while also highlighting the urgent need for a technology-driven and sustainable built environment. He mentioned the institute’s efforts to enhance collaboration among professionals in the built environment, government agencies, and policymakers to improve professional standards and regulatory compliance.

In a guest lecture, Professor Olawuyi Babatunde, an expert in Construction Technology, urged builders to transcend traditional methods and embrace digital transformation. He identified various tools, including Building Information Modelling, drone technology, and advanced building materials, as vital for improving project planning, site monitoring, and overall quality. The professor also supported the adoption of QR codes to monitor construction projects and mitigate issues related to unqualified workers in the industry.
