Ramadan: UN scribe laments humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Sudan, others

Global Leaders Express Concerns as Ramadan Begins

As Muslims around the globe begin Ramadan fasting today, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced concern regarding ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises in regions including Gaza, Sudan, Yemen, and Afghanistan.

In his Ramadan message, Guterres urged the international community to embrace the holy month’s message of unity and extend assistance to those in need. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the rights and dignity of all individuals.

“Ramadan represents a noble vision of hope and peace,” Guterres stated. “However, for too many, this vision remains elusive. From Afghanistan to Yemen, Gaza to Sudan, individuals are enduring the stark realities of conflict, hunger, and displacement.”

He called upon the world to heed the enduring message of Ramadan, advocating for efforts to bridge divides and provide hope and help to those afflicted by suffering.

The Secretary-General expressed his belief that the holy month would encourage global cooperation in creating a peaceful, generous, and just world. “Every year, I pay a special visit to a Muslim community and join in the fast. I leave these experiences inspired by the spirit of peace and compassion that Ramadan embodies,” he said.

“Ramadan Kareem!” he concluded.
