NSCDC nabs two over alleged electricity meter fraud in Osun

Two Arrested for Tampering with Electricity Meters in Osun State
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Osun State has apprehended two men in connection with the tampering of electricity meters and illegal power vending.
The suspects, identified as Babatunde, 46, and Akin, 40, were arrested after an investigation was initiated following a formal complaint from a customer of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
According to Kehinde Adeleke, the spokesperson for the NSCDC, the investigation began when the customer reported issues with his prepaid meter, which allegedly malfunctioned and prevented him from reloading credit.
State Commandant Igbalawole Sotiyo reported that initial findings suggested intentional interference with the meter. He noted that both suspects are believed to have collaborated in manipulating the device. One of the suspects has been identified as a former employee of IBEDC, who is suspected to have knowledge of the technical aspects involved in the tampering.
“The investigation revealed that the prepaid meter was unlawfully formatted, allowing for approximately 200 electricity units to appear without payment,” Commandant Sotiyo stated.
He cautioned electricians and technical service providers against engaging in meter bypassing or other illegal activities that could compromise power infrastructure.
“The Corps remains committed to safeguarding critical national assets, including electricity installations, and offenders will face prosecution,” he added.
The NSCDC confirmed that the suspects will be charged in court once investigations are complete. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities related to electricity meters or public utilities to the nearest NSCDC office.
