Opposition leaders push for fresh Electoral Act review at National Assembly

Opposition Leaders Call for Review of Nigeria’s Electoral Act

ABUJA—Leaders from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) urged the National Assembly on Thursday to initiate amendments to the Electoral Act, asserting that the existing legislation does not align with the desires of Nigerians.

During a joint press conference in Abuja, NNPP National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed emphasized the opposition’s demand for a new amendment process to eliminate what he termed “objectionable” provisions within the Act.

The opposition leaders expressed their disapproval of the Electoral Act, which was recently enacted by the National Assembly and subsequently signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.

In a communiqué delivered by Ahmed, the group called for legislators to promptly revisit the law to ensure it supports credible elections. They seek a legal framework that reflects the aspirations of Nigerians for “free, fair, transparent, and credible” electoral processes, warning that any failure to address their concerns would be unacceptable.

Notable figures present at the meeting included former Senate President David Mark, NNPP leader Buba Galadima, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate. Other attendees included ADC National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, Senator Dino Melaye, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, and former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, among other party officials and stakeholders.
