Lagos: Police reopen Badagry Expressway after deadly Otto–Ijanikin communal clash

Lagos-Badagry Expressway Reopened Following Violent Clash

LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Police Command has reopened the Lagos-Badagry Expressway at the Otto-Ijanikin axis after a violent confrontation between youths from the Ijanikin and Otto communities. The clash, which resulted in one fatality, had disrupted traffic for several hours.

In a statement released Saturday, Police Public Relations Officer Abimbola Adebisi confirmed that the expressway was cleared and reopened to motorists around 9:00 AM. The Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, led a team of police operatives and tactical units to the scene to restore order and facilitate the resumption of traffic.

Authorities identified the deceased as Akinyemi Omo Akin, who sustained gunshot injuries during the altercation and later died in the hospital. The police stated that initial investigations ruled out any involvement from their officers, indicating that cultists affiliated with both factions engaged in a gun battle prior to law enforcement’s arrival.

Seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence, all hailing from the involved communities. Law enforcement officials reported that those in custody provided voluntary statements detailing their roles in the incident. Authorities also recovered a locally fabricated pistol and two live cartridges from one suspect.

Following the unrest, the police have deployed tactical squads and anti-riot personnel throughout the affected areas and surrounding locations to apprehend any additional suspects who may have fled the scene.

The police issued a warning against further disturbances, stating that anyone instigating or sponsoring violence would face significant legal repercussions. They also called upon parents and guardians to dissuade younger community members from engaging in actions that could compromise public safety.

Residents have expressed concerns over escalating gang activity in Ijanikin, Agbara, and Oto Awori, prompting calls for enhanced security measures. In response, police assured the community that sufficient personnel have been mobilized to maintain peace and prevent a resurgence of violence.

The Commissioner has mandated a thorough investigation into the incident, which will be conducted by the State Criminal Investigation Department. Officers remain stationed in the area to ensure ongoing safety and reassure the public.
