Truck driver killed in head-on collision on Calabar–Itu Highway

Truck Driver Killed in Calabar–Itu Highway Accident
A truck driver died Monday morning following a collision on the Calabar–Itu federal highway, which has been plagued by poor road conditions.
The incident involved two articulated trucks that collided head-on, resulting in one driver being pronounced dead at the scene. Eyewitnesses reported that the highway’s deteriorating state contributed to the crash.
According to Samuel Otu, a witness, neither truck was traveling at high speed. He noted that one truck was transporting stones while the other carried jerricans of palm oil. “The truck carrying stones swerved due to the bad portions of the road and rammed into the oncoming palm oil truck, crushing its front and killing the driver instantly,” Otu said.
The impact severely damaged the front section of the palm oil-laden truck, causing significant traffic disruption along the busy route.
In response to the accident, Innocent Tommy Etuk, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Cross River State, confirmed the incident and stated that he had dispatched officers to the scene. “I deeply sympathize with the loss of life,” said Etuk. “I have instructed my men to move to the scene without delay to evacuate the body and ensure the highway is cleared for motorists.”
The Calabar–Itu highway, which connects Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, has long been a concern for commuters due to its ongoing deterioration and the frequency of accidents.
