2026 WAFCON: ‘It wouldn’t happen for other tournaments’ – Super Falcons’ Plumptre slams CAF

Super Falcons Defender Criticizes CAF for WAFCON Postponement
Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has expressed her discontent with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the postponement of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
In a video interview shared by BBC Match of the Day, Plumptre remarked on the rarity of such changes in other football tournaments. Her comments come after CAF announced it would move the tournament dates from March 17 to April 3, 2026, to July 25 to August 16, 2026, in Morocco.
The decision was made due to unforeseen challenges related to the planning and organization of the event, following discussions with global football leaders and other stakeholders involved with the competition.
Plumptre expressed her disappointment regarding the timing of the announcement, stating, “It just wouldn’t happen for other tournaments in women’s football and especially in men’s football. Last WAFCON wasn’t less important than this one just because it wasn’t qualification for a World Cup.” She emphasized that continental competitions should maintain their significance regardless of external pressures or larger goals.
