India’s Cricket Board Awards Historic Bonus to T20 World Cup Champions

India’s cricket board has announced a bonus of 1.31 billion rupees (approximately $14.24 million) for the nation’s T20 World Cup-winning cricket team. This substantial sum is six times the amount awarded for the championship title, which was secured on March 8 in Ahmedabad against New Zealand.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the world’s wealthiest cricket board, made the announcement on Tuesday. This bonus exceeds the tournament’s total prize pool of $11.25 million, which includes a payout of $2.34 million that the team received for their victory.

In a statement, the BCCI congratulated the players, support staff, and selectors on this historic achievement, expressing hopes for their future success. The prize money will be distributed among the entire team, which includes coaches and support staff.

This year’s bonus follows a similar one last year, where the BCCI rewarded its Champions Trophy-winning team with $6.72 million, a sum triple that of the $2.24 million awarded for that title win.

With this victory, India has claimed the T20 World Cup crown for the third time. Captain Suryakumar Yadav emphasized that the team’s next significant objective is to secure a gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia remarked that the win solidifies India’s status as one of the most successful teams in T20 history. Cricket enjoys immense popularity in India, and top players are revered as stars.

Celebrations erupted Sunday night throughout the country, with fans dressed in blue taking to the streets, drumming, and dancing to Bollywood songs in joyous commemoration of the team’s triumph.
