Henry Nwosu, Former Super Eagles Midfielder, Dies at 62

LAGOS, Nigeria — Henry Nwosu, a former midfielder for the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, has died at the age of 62. His passing was confirmed by former teammate Segun Odegbami on social media Saturday.

Nwosu spent five days in the hospital before his death early Saturday morning at 4:00 a.m. He was receiving care in intensive care at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, where he had been since Wednesday.

“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu, MON. May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven,” Odegbami wrote in his post.

A celebrated member of the Super Eagles, Nwosu played a significant role in Nigeria’s historic victory at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, which was hosted in Lagos. He was the youngest player on the squad as the team, then known as the Green Eagles, clinched the country’s first continental title on home soil.
