Act now before it’s too late – Asake, Mark, others warn govt over insecurity

Security Concerns Rise as Nigeria Approaches 2027 Elections

As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, growing concerns about security have emerged among citizens, particularly in Kaduna State. Many residents are voicing their dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of recent violent attacks, attributing the situation to a perceived neglect of their constitutional duty to safeguard lives and property.

In Southern Kaduna, incessant assaults by armed groups have resulted in countless fatalities, numerous abductions, and the displacement of thousands. These developments have sparked fears that many individuals may be unable to vote in the upcoming elections.

Criticism of Government’s Focus

Jonathan Asake, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 Kaduna State election, expressed his belief that the current administration prioritizes election manipulation over public safety. In an interview with DAILY POST, he stated that the government appears indifferent to the impacts of insecurity on residents.

“Instead of addressing insecurity, the government seems focused on strategies to rig the elections,” Asake said. He lamented the silence of elected officials on the pressing issues of violence and insecurity, warning that a slide toward a one-party system could undermine the essence of democracy in Nigeria.

Political Accountability Questioned

Mark Jacob, a former Attorney General in Kaduna State, criticized local representatives who, despite being aware of the ongoing violence, fail to speak out. He claimed that their inaction is rewarded politically, adding, “Those in political office today are not expecting any elections; they seem more interested in maintaining power through undemocratic means.”

He noted that if genuine preparations for elections were underway, elected officials would be actively working to ensure the safety of citizens, allowing them to participate freely in the electoral process.

Jacob further suggested that without proper safeguards, the next electoral process could devolve into mere appointments rather than a transparent election.

Call for Action from Leaders

Security expert Salisu Usman emphasized the urgency for government intervention to improve public safety and facilitate citizens’ voting rights. He criticized politicians for prioritizing their own ambitions over the welfare of the populace.

“The situation reflects a troubling level of ignorance among leaders, especially in the northern regions,” Usman stated. “Elected officials must understand the needs of their communities and act accordingly.”

The ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), maintains that it is addressing security challenges and prioritizes the safety of Nigerians. Nonetheless, as tensions rise ahead of the elections, public demand for effective action continues to grow.
