AMAC condemns killing of staff during enforcement operation in Abuja

Abuja Municipal Area Council Condemns Killing of Staff During Enforcement Operation

The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has condemned the fatal shooting of one of its staff members, Oladipupo Akinola, during an enforcement operation in Wuse II on April 24, 2026.

In a statement issued by Kingsley Madaki, media aide to AMAC’s chairman, the council characterized the incident as a “cold-blooded murder” that occurred in daylight at NITEL Junction. Akinola, an officer in the Mobile Advert Permit Department, was part of a team checking vehicles with expired operational permits when they stopped a Hilux vehicle associated with a Chinese company.

According to the council, the situation escalated when two men in Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) uniforms appeared and became aggressive. The statement alleges that one of these men fired a weapon at close range, resulting in Akinola’s immediate death.

AMAC claims that the attackers threatened bystanders, confiscated the impounded vehicle, and fled the scene. In response, the council’s leadership stated, “We will not be intimidated by the barrel of a gun,” and urged the NSCDC to identify the individuals involved, questioning whether they were actual officers or disguised mercenaries.

The incident has been reported to law enforcement, and AMAC is requesting a “swift, transparent, and thorough investigation.” The authorities are also investigating potential connections between the Chinese company and the armed individuals.

AMAC emphasized that “no entity, foreign or domestic, is above the laws of the Federal Capital Territory.” Describing the event as “a dark day for Abuja,” the council noted that the killing of a public servant while performing official duties constitutes an affront to the state.

The council expressed condolences to Akinola’s family, honoring him as “a hero of the grassroots.” The statement concluded, “His sacrifice will not be in vain. Justice must be swift. Justice must be seen. Justice must be served.”
