Amnesty opens probe into Kano political violence

Amnesty International Launches Inquiry into Gang Violence in Kano State

KANO, Nigeria — Amnesty International announced the initiation of a public inquiry into increasing gang violence and political intimidation in Kano State following a series of deadly attacks that claimed at least five lives in Kano and Gwarzo on May 5, 2026.

In a statement released Saturday, the organization stated that the inquiry is part of an ongoing investigation aimed at identifying both the perpetrators and the politicians allegedly financing violent gangs referred to as “‘Yan daba.”

Isa Sanusi, Executive Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, emphasized that armed groups linked to influential politicians and government officials represent a significant threat to peace and human rights in Kano.

“The recent activities of armed gangs working on behalf of some prominent politicians and government officials endanger the safety of all residents,” Sanusi said. “It is unacceptable that people in Kano are living in fear.”

Amnesty International is urging the public, civil society organizations, and families of victims to share information through secure reporting channels to assist in the investigation and promote accountability.

The organization asserts that individuals found to be sponsoring or participating in political violence should face sanctions as outlined in both Nigerian and international law.

Furthermore, Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities, political parties, and politicians to uphold the rule of law and ensure the protection of lives and property before, during, and after political activities.

“The authorities must respect the rule of law at all times and guarantee that lives and property are safeguarded during political events,” Sanusi added.

As the nation approaches future elections, Amnesty International called on politicians and political parties to publicly distance themselves from violent groups accused of threatening residents and undermining democratic participation.

The organization asserted that the escalating violence in Kano jeopardizes citizens’ ability to engage in social and political activities, warning that this trend requires immediate attention.
