Newborn Boy Abducted from Benue State Healthcare Facility

A newborn baby boy was reportedly taken from a healthcare facility in the Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred shortly after the mother and child had been moved to a ward for post-delivery care.

According to eyewitness accounts, the infant initially did not cry after birth, prompting a nurse on duty to assess his condition. The child later responded and was deemed stable by medical staff.

While in the ward, a woman approached the mother, identifying herself as a nurse. She requested to take the baby for an additional examination. The woman then allegedly took the baby from the mother and proceeded toward the labor room.

The baby’s grandmother, sensing something amiss, followed the woman to the entrance of the labor room. Despite asking the grandmother to step aside, the woman assured her that there was no cause for concern. The grandmother complied, but moments later, the woman reportedly vanished with the baby.

Nursing staff at the facility later denied any involvement in the incident, stating that the individual who posed as a nurse was not affiliated with their team. This denial resulted in panic among relatives and concerned community members who gathered at the hospital to support the mother.

In response to the situation, security personnel were deployed to the hospital to help maintain order and prevent escalating tensions.

On Wednesday night, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Peter Aondongu confirmed the incident, stating that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. The officer noted that the case had garnered significant attention, prompting its transfer to Makurdi for a more thorough inquiry.

Aondongu indicated that more information would be provided as investigators ascertain additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the newborn’s disappearance.
