Controversy deepens over detention of Taraba senatorial hopeful, Bodejo

Controversy Erupts in Taraba State Following Arrest of Senatorial Aspirant

Taraba State is facing renewed controversy following the arrest and ongoing detention of Abdullahi Bello Bodejo, a leading aspirant for the Taraba Central Senatorial seat. Allegations have surfaced claiming that authorities are pressuring Bodejo to withdraw from the 2027 senatorial race.

Bodejo was taken into custody by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on May 7, 2026, in Jalingo, the state capital, and was subsequently flown to Abuja. Sources indicate that he has since been transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he remains detained.

Allegations suggest that within 48 hours of his detention, Bodejo was approached with a request to withdraw from the upcoming election as a condition for his release. Reports indicate that he was advised to postpone his aspirations until 2031.

Adamu Isa, Bodejo’s Campaign Director, criticized the circumstances surrounding the arrest and the subsequent transfer to Abuja. He characterized the incident as humiliating and claimed that Bodejo was treated “like a common criminal” in front of supporters.

Bodejo, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been an active contributor to the party, notably supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election through various personal resources and political networks.

Isa stated that those opposed to Bodejo’s candidacy should have sought dialogue rather than allegedly using intimidation tactics involving security agencies. He emphasized that Bodejo is a law-abiding citizen with the constitutional right to contest or withdraw from the race at his discretion. Isa also highlighted that any resolution should arise from peaceful discussions among stakeholders.

Moreover, Isa claimed that a consensus committee established by the Taraba chapter of the APC failed to invite Bodejo for discussions prior to his detention. He urged the national leadership of the APC and other key stakeholders to intervene, ensuring justice and the immediate release of Bodejo.
