Court ruling on NDC is a hurdle, not stop sign – Obi

By Henry Umoru

LOKOJA, Nigeria — Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), characterized a recent judgment by a Federal High Court as a challenge to be overcome rather than an insurmountable obstacle. The court ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should not recognize the NDC as a political party while pending legal issues are addressed.

The former governor of Anambra State urged his supporters to remain calm as the NDC’s legal team reviews the ruling.

In a statement released through a spokesperson, Idris Zekeri, Obi’s media representatives said they received numerous inquiries regarding the court’s decision.

“The judgment from Lokoja regarding the legal status of the Nigeria Democratic Congress is unexpected,” the statement noted. “Our legal teams are currently assessing the ruling and preparing for potential corrective and appellate actions. Meanwhile, we encourage our supporters and coalition partners to maintain their composure.”

Obi emphasized that efforts to challenge the existing political landscape would inevitably encounter resistance and legal obstacles.

“This ruling represents a hurdle, not a stop sign,” he stated. “Our commitment to building a transparent and effective alternative for Nigerians remains steadfast. We will vigorously pursue our legal rights, and while this setback may momentarily impede our progress, our ultimate goal is unchanged.”
