Return of Displaced Persons Underway in Borno State

Maiduguri, Borno State — The process of repatriating internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Yobe State back to Maiduguri has begun, with officials prioritizing the safety of women and children, who represent the majority of those returning.

The relocation effort is coordinated by Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), the Security Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni, in collaboration with the Director of Search and Rescue at the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and various security agencies.

As of Tuesday morning, IDPs from the Water Board facility and the Roundabout axis along Maiduguri Road commenced their journey from Damaturu, responding to previous announcements regarding their readiness to return.

To facilitate this movement, the Yobe State Government has provided free transportation and comprehensive security escorts. According to officials overseeing the operation, 1,295 individuals have been successfully relocated to Maiduguri thus far.

The returning population primarily consists of women and children under the age of 14, underscoring the vulnerability of those displaced. Security personnel stationed along the route have been observed maintaining order and instilling confidence among returnees.

“Profiling of the remaining IDPs is ongoing,” an official noted.

In Kasaisa village, 93 households, comprising 547 individuals, have been registered for return.

Some IDPs expressed their feelings about going home, stating their excitement about returning to their ancestral lands in Borno State.

The government’s provision of transportation and security has alleviated the burden on these displaced families, offering significant relief as it works to reintegrate them safely into their communities.
