DSS operative shoots at FRSC officers during traffic stop in Abuja

Federal Road Safety Corps Condemns Armed Attack on Personnel
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has condemned an alleged armed attack on its personnel by a motorist, who is reported to be an operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), during a routine traffic enforcement operation in Abuja.
According to a statement from the agency, the incident occurred on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at approximately 3:20 p.m. near the RS7.118 Idu Unit Command after an FRSC patrol team stopped a Toyota Carina for a suspected traffic violation.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed stated that the driver refused to comply with instructions to stop and continued driving erratically until becoming trapped in traffic near the command.
When FRSC officials approached the vehicle to conduct standard checks, the driver became hostile and verbally abusive, resisting the enforcement process, the agency reported.
The situation escalated when the driver allegedly advanced toward the officers, brandished a firearm, and fired two shots in the vicinity of the command.
“In the face of imminent danger to lives and property, FRSC personnel demonstrated remarkable restraint and tactical discipline, rapidly disarming the assailant without any loss of life. One Marshal sustained minor injuries during the incident,” the statement noted.
The suspect was arrested and subsequently handed over to officers at the Nigeria Police Force station in Life Camp, along with the firearm, ammunition, and the vehicle involved.
Preliminary investigations identified the suspect as a DSS operative, and the case has been referred to the appropriate state command for further inquiry.
Corps Marshal Mohammed commended FRSC personnel for their professionalism amid provocation, emphasizing that no individual, regardless of rank or agency affiliation, is exempt from the law.
“All individuals must adhere to established traffic regulations and show respect for authority,” the statement reiterated.
The FRSC also cautioned against the misuse of firearms and official power to intimidate law enforcement officers performing their duties.
“Firearms and official status should never be used as tools of intimidation,” Mohammed stated, calling for enhanced cooperation and mutual respect among security agencies to promote public safety and national security.
