Ego, competition destroying collaborations among Nigerian artists – Joeboy

Ego Hindering Nigerian Artists’ Collaborations, Joeboy Says

LAGOS, Nigeria — Afrobeats artist Joeboy recently addressed the challenges Nigerian musicians face when collaborating, highlighting ego as a significant barrier.

In an interview with Cool FM Lagos, Joeboy, alongside fellow artist Wizkid Chan, noted that many musicians approach collaborations with a competitive attitude, often aiming to outshine one another.

“I prefer to work with artists I have a friendly relationship with. This way, there is less risk of conflict or competition,” Joeboy explained. “When I feature an artist, I expect them to bring their best, which enhances the track rather than creates rivalry.”

Wizkid Chan echoed Joeboy’s sentiments, emphasizing that ego can complicate the collaborative process. “My main issue with collaboration is ego. I never interfere when someone else is recording, and I expect the same respect in return,” he stated.

He further criticized those who attempt to dictate the direction of a collaboration, asserting, “The reason I would feature someone is that I admire their unique style. Changing one’s verse upon hearing a collaborator’s contribution is unnecessary and detracts from the purpose of the collaboration.”

Both artists underlined that the goal of collaboration should be to merge diverse elements, ultimately enriching the music rather than fostering competition.
