EPL: ‘Disastrous’ – Gary Neville warns Alonso over Chelsea job

Chelsea Faces Challenges After Disappointing Season, Warns Neville
Former Manchester United player Gary Neville has issued a warning to Xabi Alonso, the newly appointed manager of Chelsea, following a tumultuous season for the club. The Blues ended their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland, finishing in 10th place in the Premier League and failing to qualify for any European competitions.
Chelsea’s interim manager Calum McFarlane has been leading the team since the dismissal of Liam Rosenior last month, marking the club’s third managerial change in a challenging season that began with Enzo Maresca at the helm.
Alonso was formally announced as Chelsea’s new manager last week, signing a four-year contract and set to assume his role in July. In comments made on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville highlighted the considerable challenges Alonso will face in reviving the club’s fortunes. He described the task as monumental, suggesting that Alonso has been given full responsibility to address the problems at Chelsea after a season he deemed “disastrous.”
Despite a successful stint at Bayer Leverkusen, where Alonso led the team to their first Bundesliga title, his time at Real Madrid was less fruitful, ending after just seven months by mutual agreement.
During the match against Sunderland, Trai Hume opened the scoring for the hosts in the first half, and an own goal by Malo Gusto further extended their lead. Cole Palmer briefly brought hope to Chelsea, scoring with over half an hour left but the team couldn’t equalize. The match concluded with Chelsea reduced to ten men, as Wesley Fofana received the club’s eighth red card of the season, a total that is significantly higher than any other team in the league.
