Ex-militant calls for return of fleeing Benue monarchs

Traditional Rulers Urged to Return to Benue Communities Amid Ongoing Peace Efforts

Community leaders from the Sankera area of Benue State are being urged to reestablish their presence in their communities after years of displacement due to ongoing insecurity.

The appeal came from Mr. Terzulum Amakaa Akwaza, a former militant leader known as Amakaa Overall Konyo. He called on monarchs who left their homes in Katsina-Ala, Ukum, and Logo Local Government Areas to return and reclaim their traditional roles.

Sankera has faced severe security challenges, with violent clashes occurring over nearly two decades. Many traditional rulers fled their territories during the height of the unrest, fearing for their safety.

In response to the escalating violence, emergency security measures were implemented during the tenure of former Governor Samuel Ortom. Recent developments, however, indicate a shift toward peace, sparked by initiatives from the Benue State Government encouraging armed groups to disarm.

Several former militant leaders, including Akwaza, have shown support for the peace process, which receives backing from both religious and community figures. Among these is Most Rev. Isaac Bundepuun Dugu, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Katsina-Ala and Co-Chair of the Sankera Peace and Reconciliation Committee.

This committee was formed following the inauguration of Governor Hyacinth Alia. Observers view Akwaza’s latest appeal as a sign of growing confidence in the stabilization of the region.

Sources indicate that traditional rulers from Sankera met privately with the Tor Tiv, HRM Prof. James Ayatse, on Friday. However, specifics of this meeting have not been disclosed, and the Tor Tiv’s media aide, Freddie Adamgbe, declined to comment.

Despite these peace initiatives, many displaced monarchs have yet to return, highlighting the ongoing challenges in rebuilding trust within the community.
