FA Cup: Why VAR denied Chelsea two penalties in 1-0 defeat to Man City

Chelsea’s Penalty Appeals in FA Cup Final: Analysis by Former Referee Mark Clattenburg

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has addressed Chelsea’s unsuccessful appeals for penalties during their 1-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Antoine Semenyo’s solitary goal at Wembley secured Manchester City’s domestic double. However, the match could have taken a different turn had Chelsea been awarded penalties for incidents in both halves.

The first controversial moment occurred during injury time of the first half when Joao Pedro was knocked down in Manchester City’s penalty area by Abdukodir Khusanov. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR), Peter Bankes, reviewed the incident but did not advise on-field referee Darren England to take a second look.

Clattenburg commented on the situation in an interview with The Chelsea Chronicle, stating, “Abdukodir Khusanov comes across Joao Pedro on the edge of the penalty area. There is contact, but I would have been surprised if a foul and penalty were given, as Khusanov was stronger and it was shoulder to shoulder.”

As Chelsea reflects on the match, the events surrounding the penalty decisions continue to be a topic of interest among fans and analysts alike.
