Father demands death sentence for killers as slain Abia Nursing student is buried
Umuologho Community Mourns Slain Nursing Student Wendy Achumba
Umuokohia, Abia State — The body of Wendy Achumba, a nursing student at the School of Nursing Umuologho Obowo, was laid to rest on Friday in her father’s compound in Umuokohia, Obingwa Local Government Area.
Achumba was allegedly raped and murdered on May 21, 2026, at her lodge after she reportedly rejected advances from a local resident.
During the burial, her father, Jerry Achumba, urged Abia State Governor Alex Otti, law enforcement, and the judiciary to ensure that those responsible for his daughter’s death face the death penalty. He expressed his family’s grief and determination for justice.
“My family will not rest until those who killed her are tried, convicted, and executed; my daughter must get justice,” he said.
Achumba emphasized that the tragedy did not end with the burial. “Don’t say because she has been buried it has ended. No, it has not ended,” he remarked.
Governor Otti, represented by his Special Assistant on Students Affairs, Chinedu Nwosu, promised that the government would pursue justice for Achumba. “A bright future and a life full of talent was cut short in a brutal act,” he stated, vowing to support the family throughout the judicial process.
Hundreds of Achumba’s fellow students attended the burial, mourning the loss of their classmate in a poignant display of solidarity.
