Truck Accident Claims Life of Police Officer, One Other

GOMBE, Nigeria — A truck crash at the New Mile 3 Market along the Gombe-Yola highway on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of a female police officer and one unidentified male pedestrian.

The incident occurred when a DAF truck carrying bags of grain reportedly lost control due to brake failure and collided with roadside shops. Two additional individuals, including the truck driver, sustained injuries in the accident.

Witnesses stated that the driver, traveling from the Taraba area, experienced brake issues as he attempted to navigate a one-way route into a filling station. The truck struck traders, passersby, and various nearby establishments.

The Gombe State Police Command confirmed that the accident involved the truck, registered as XH 122 GME, three motorcycles, and several pedestrians and shops.

Police spokesperson Buhari Abdullahi reported that investigations indicate the driver was attempting to make a prohibited turn when the brakes failed. He stated, “As a result of the accident, two persons, namely Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina, attached to the Communications Department of the Gombe State Command, and one unidentified male pedestrian, regrettably lost their lives. Two others, including the truck driver, were injured and are currently receiving treatment. The accident also caused damage to three motorcycles and some nearby shops.”

Commissioner of Police Umar Ahmed Chuso has cautioned motorists against violating traffic rules and urged drivers to maintain their vehicles, emphasizing the importance of safety to prevent similar incidents.

In a statement, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya expressed his condolences over the tragic event and lamented the loss of life and property damage. He extended sympathies to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery. The governor also praised emergency responders for their rapid response to the scene and reiterated the importance of adherence to traffic regulations, particularly for operators of heavy-duty vehicles.
