Fire guts 10 shops in Katsina central market

Fire Destroys Ten Shops at Katsina Central Market

KATSINA, Nigeria — An early morning fire on Tuesday gutted ten shops at the Katsina Central Market, also known as Fatima Baika Market.

Local vendors speculated that a solar-powered electricity inverter may have ignited the blaze, which rapidly spread through sections of the market.

Rabe Audi, spokesperson for the Katsina State Fire Service, confirmed that a distress call was received shortly after the fire ignited, prompting the agency to respond swiftly. He noted that firefighters’ quick action prevented the flames from spreading to additional areas, saving seven nearby shops and various goods.

Despite these efforts, Audi stated that ten shops were completely destroyed before firefighters managed to bring the fire under control. The affected businesses included those selling food items, beverages, textiles, and assorted goods. A Peugeot 406 vehicle was also rescued from the flames.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Audi added. He urged the public, particularly users of solar inverter systems, to ensure proper installation and maintenance to mitigate the risk of similar incidents in the future.

A thorough assessment of the damage is planned to quantify the financial losses sustained in the market.
