Five Killed, Twelve Injured in Ebonyi State Road Accident

EBONYI STATE — A tragic road accident occurred Friday along the Nkalagu axis of the Enugu–Abakaliki Federal Highway, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including a female child. Twelve others sustained various injuries.

Daniel Asanya, the Ebonyi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the details during an interview in Abakaliki. He reported that the accident took place around Edema Bridge in the Ishielu Local Government Area.

The incident involved a white Toyota Hiace bus bearing registration number RSH 231 XE, which was transporting 17 passengers traveling from Abakaliki to Enugu. The group comprised 12 males, four females, and one child.

Asanya stated that the crash resulted in the deaths of four males and one female child, with the injured passengers—including eight males and four females—being transported to Annunciation Hospital in Emene, Enugu State, for medical treatment. The bodies of the deceased were taken to a local morgue.

Preliminary investigations indicate that excessive speed was a contributing factor to the accident, Asanya noted. Additionally, items recovered from the scene included three mobile phones, two bags with personal belongings, and a small amount of rice.

The FRSC commander urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly in areas of the Enugu–Abakaliki highway that are currently under construction. He also called on the construction company managing the project to install appropriate reflective and illuminated warning signs to improve safety for road users.
