Flooding: Why Tinubu should declare state of emergency on gully erosion in South-East – Omeire

Imo West Senatorial Candidate Calls for Emergency on Erosion

Rufus Omeire, the Action Peoples Party candidate for the Imo West senatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 elections, is urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in response to gully erosion affecting the South-East region.

In a statement released on Friday, Omeire highlighted the significant damage caused by erosion, which he said has devastated communities, infrastructure, and agricultural land across the area. He emphasized that the erosion poses serious risks to local residents and hampers sustainable development.

“I urge President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on gully erosion in the South-East, particularly in the Orlu Senatorial Zone and Ideato Federal Constituency,” Omeire said. “The devastating erosion ravaging our communities continues to destroy roads, homes, farmlands, and public infrastructure, posing a serious threat to lives and livelihoods. Urgent federal intervention is necessary to address this environmental disaster.”

Omeire’s statement follows President Tinubu’s recent approval of a major infrastructure project—the 150-kilometer Oba–Nnewi–Uga–Akokwa–Arondizuogu–Okigwe Road—which has been subject to years of neglect.

In related news, Ikenga Ugochinyere, the House of Representatives member representing the Ideato Federal Constituency, also responded to the announcement regarding the road construction on Thursday.
