Gov Aliyu proposes law against bandit informants in Sokoto

Sokoto State Government Proposes Tougher Penalties for Informants

The Sokoto State Government is planning to introduce legislation aimed at enforcing stricter penalties for individuals who assist bandits and other criminal elements in the region. This announcement was made by Governor Ahmed Aliyu during a Sallah homage to the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, at the palace on Wednesday, as the Muslim community celebrated Eid-el-Kabir.

Governor Aliyu stated that the proposed law would be submitted to the Sokoto State House of Assembly to enhance measures against insecurity and to target those who collaborate with criminal organizations.

He emphasized that informants pose a significant challenge to security initiatives by providing vital support and information to gangs operating in the state. “We need to come together and stop the informant syndrome if we are to succeed in defeating bandits,” Aliyu said.

The governor regarded informants as a major threat to peace and warned that his administration would take a firm stance against actions that compromise security efforts in Sokoto. He also urged politicians to refrain from using political maneuvering to create unrest ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Aliyu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies in their fight against banditry and other security issues plaguing the state. He further cautioned against vandalism of public infrastructure, highlighting the importance of protecting state-funded projects.
