ABUJA — Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, paid tribute to the late Chief Daniel Orbih, revealing that Orbih rejected numerous offers from former Governor Rotimi Amaechi to withdraw his support for Wike’s gubernatorial campaign.

Wike spoke at a tribute event in Abuja on Wednesday for Orbih, the former National Vice-Chairman (South South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who passed away on August 31 at the age of 64.

“There was nothing in this world that was not done to induce him. My governor then sent people to Dan, offered him everything, but Dan stood firm and said, ‘No, I will not accept, I will not agree,’” Wike recalled.

Wike traced their connection to a challenging period between 2013 and 2014, when political rivals attempted to thwart his ambitions. “Today I am a Minister of the FCT; yesterday I was a governor. Who did God use for me to become governor? It was Dan,” he said, highlighting Orbih’s support during critical moments of his political journey.

Orbih, according to Wike, contributed significantly to his campaign by providing two bulletproof Mercedes-Benz buses for his security and by organizing extensive support across the South South region. The minister emphasized Orbih’s character, stating that the late politician never sought personal gain or government contracts during Wike’s tenure as governor.

“Dan is not a typical Nigerian politician. Throughout my eight years as governor, he never came, either by phone or in person, to say, ‘I need this contract.’ Never,” Wike said.

Wike noted that loyalty was a hallmark of Orbih’s family, asserting that reliable politicians demonstrate their worth during crises. He added that without Orbih’s efforts as National Vice-Chairman, many current lawmakers would not have achieved their positions.

He commended Orbih for fostering political collaboration in Edo State and urged that he be honored with a state burial, given his contributions to political development. “I will continue to maintain my relationship with Dan’s family,” he said, expressing his intention to discuss ways to honor Orbih’s legacy.

Senator Magnus Abe, Chairman of the Board of the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, shared his personal connection to Orbih, stating that he is a politician today because of his introduction to the field through Orbih. “Dan was indeed a bridge builder par excellence,” Abe remarked, reflecting on Orbih’s life and impact on those present.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North and a former Governor of Edo State, acknowledged Orbih’s influence on his governance. “Dan made me a better governor,” Oshiomhole said, crediting him with guiding his decision-making and strategic considerations.

Expressing gratitude, Oshiomhole thanked Wike for facilitating a reconciliation with Orbih after their political differences. He emphasized the importance of Orbih’s legacy and his commitment to unity within the community.

Senator Sandy Onor, the PDP presidential candidate, described Orbih as “a profound public intellectual” and “a defender of Edo heritage.” He characterized Orbih as a great man, family-oriented, and a devoted father.

The tributes reflected Orbih’s lasting impact on the political landscape and the deep respect he garnered from colleagues and supporters throughout his career.
